Professor Umaru Shehu is a distinguished Nigerian Professor of Medicine and a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He holds the title of Professor Emeritus in Community Health at the University of Maiduguri and has also served as the President of the Nigerian Academy of Science.

Professor Umaru Shehu earned his Bachelor of Medicine degree (MBBS) from the University of London. Additionally, he received a fellowship from the Institute of Cancer Research and holds the prestigious role of Editor-in-Chief at the British Medical Journal.

His academic achievements include receiving Honorary Doctor of Science Degrees from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. In recognition of his contributions to the field, he was awarded the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) by the Government of Nigeria in 1979 and the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) in 2000.

Professor Umaru Shehu’s career is marked by a series of notable appointments and roles. He served as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, from 1978 to 1980. He also contributed significantly to the World Health Organization (WHO), where he held various positions, including Short Term Consultant, National WHO Program Coordinator/Representative in Nigeria, and Director of WHO Sub-Regional Health Development Office 111.

 

In addition to his academic and international roles, Professor Shehu has been actively involved in Nigerian academia. He was appointed as an Honorary Consultant Physician at the University of Maiduguri in 1991 and later became Professor Emeritus in 2000. He also held positions as the Provost of the College of Medical Sciences and as the Sole Administrator of the University of Maiduguri.

 

His contributions extended beyond the University of Maiduguri, as he served as the Chairman of the Board of Management at the University College Hospital Ibadan from 1991 to 1994. He also played key leadership roles as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council at both Bayero University, Kano (1993-1996) and the University of Lagos (1996-1999).
